Rescuing Raoul Wallenberg

Why are we making a documentary about the life and mysterious disappearance of Raul Wallenberg? Why now?
08 Nov 2006

Many people know about Oscar Schindler’s acts of courage during the Nazi Holocaust thanks to Steven Spielberg’s movie, “Schindler’s List”. Schindler’s actions were brave, yet pale in the light of Raoul Wallenberg’s exceptional heroism. Several different productions have brought Wallenberg’s story to life, though most were produced long ago and were only seen by a very limited audience around the world. None has focused on exploring the questions surrounding his ultimate fate.

Spreading the Message

The cornerstone of the Raoul Wallenberg Children’s Foundation International is a documentary film, “Rescuing Raoul Wallenberg”. The film highlights the life and heroism of Raoul Wallenberg and explores his fate through the eyes of Sonja Sonnenfeld as “witness of the century”.

The Documentary

What really became of Raoul Wallenberg? Sonja Sonnenfeld as Secretary of the Stockholm-based Raoul Wallenberg Committee, worked for Wallenberg’s release from the Russian prison system. Working with Wallenberg’s sister, Nina Lagergren, brother, Guy von Dardel, and Swedish Diplomat Per Anger, she found many supporters over the years to help her investigate Wallenberg’s fate. Among those she met with are Mikhail Gorbachev, Henry Kissinger, and Helmut Kohl. This documentary explores Mrs. Sonnenfeld’s many contacts and missions; the national and international figures who worked with her and the Raoul Wallenberg Committee to free Wallenberg.

All profits from the sale and/or showing of the film will be retained by the Foundation and used for its programs. An accompanying curriculum of discussion guides and other teaching tools based on Mrs. Sonnenfeld’s classroom presentations will serve as a resource for generating discussion and debate in classrooms and community groups in the United States, Europe and other countries.
